THE ORGAN

We are blessed with an outstanding Müller pipe organ with its 1400 pipes, 35 stops and 2 manuals but it does need regular tuning and care to maintain it in prime playing condition. Unfortunately, the tuning and maintenance is expensive because it is a painstaking and time consuming undertaking. Factors such as changes in ambient temperature, damp, winter cold, summer heat and humidity all take their toll on the delicate workings of the instrument. At present we are only able to afford one full maintenance service a year and unfortunately that is inadequate for an instrument such as ours. I intend to approach the Parish Council for sanction to investigate the possibility of starting a dedicated organ maintenance fund so that more frequent maintenance can be undertaken. If permitted, I will enlarge on my vision for the special fund in due course and how parishioners can assist me to make that need a reality.

SENIOR CHOIR

In terms of numbers we are still seeking new recruits to strengthen to size of the choir but in terms of musical activities during services we are much stronger and more participative. Our main objective is to make St. Mark’s Cathedral our first priority and so we are active every Sunday morning. We’re chanting, singing and leading the congregation throughout the whole Eucharistic service and intend to present two new Mass settings for 2018/2019 in addition to the present Dudman and Addington settings. But we are still very much in need of new members, particularly male voices, and we were delighted recently to welcome a new member, Priscilla Page (soprano). I am most grateful to the Senior Choir members for setting a well-disciplined example to members of the Junior Choir.

JUNIOR CHOIR

The Junior Choir has become more involved in Sunday services and in order to build on their enthusiasm I am in the process of compiling a booklet for the choir to be used in a planned workshop which will focus on discussing the nature of a chorister’s involvement and commitment, as well as preparing them for 2018 and beyond. The workshop will also be an opportunity for the members to learn new pieces from a booklet which I will hand to them. A lot of hard work lies ahead for them but I sense an enthusiasm and willingness to learn and I want to build on that, at the same time making it an enjoyable and rewarding experience for them.
